A statement from Daniel Fleming:

“While we are awarded with the opportunity to consume more content than at any time in history—enriching our educations, expanding our horizons and reducing the perceived size of the world—we are simultaneously faced with an ever-confused and ever-lessened sense of self, and how one can or should fit into such a fast-paced and varied world. We struggle just to keep up with everyday events, our understanding of our selves fall by the wayside, in spite of it being more important than ever to know where you truly stand and who you stand alongside.

Although many seek to assist others by guiding them through the muck, I approach with a gentler hand and use narrative and symbolism, not to guide the viewer to my solution, but to present the viewer with a problem and allow them to naturally find their own way. While I have an intention with my paintings, I truly want each viewer to use the symbols, words and objects I have used to interpret and understand the painting from their own perspective. In doing so, each viewer not only becomes more in tune with the narrative presented, but they also reveal truths about themselves and their beliefs by finding a conclusion on their own, whether or not that conclusion is what I intended. We can be told what to feel and work to truly feel that ourselves, or we can take control of the narrative and understand our own perspective. I, and my paintings, seek to promote the latter.”
