Driving, C.S. Fuqua

I take in too much scenery—
that’s the joke:
Keep your eyes on the road!
But looking took us off the interstate
to climb the pink mountain,
to swim in spring water,
to find dinosaur prints,
to see the sun set on the gulf
and rise on the plains.
Had my eyes been solely set
on destination,
we would have missed it all,
experiencing nothing
but miles and miles and miles,
with nothing to recall later
among a laugh or two.
What would we have done
had we arrived at our destination
with so much time on our hands?
